An easy circular bike route with a tea room option at the end.
Key route details
- Region(s): South of Scotland
- Distance: 8 miles
- Difficulty: Easy route
- Type of Ride: Trail Riding
- Surface: Tarmac
- Environment: Rural
Start Point: Palgowan
End Point: Circular
Both routes start from Glen Trool Visitor Centre which has a tea room. Please bear in mind that forestry operations may mean that some sections are occasionally closed. There is an attractive camp site with a shop, further up the glen, and a hotel serving bar food just south of Glentrool Village.
The town of Newton Stewart is eight miles south of Glen Trool. An good way to reach this on a bike is via the quiet minor road starting from Borgan (see map).
This could be done on any wide tyred bike and could be suitable for families. Apart from a few hundred metres on the minor road to Straiton, and a mile between Glen Trool Village and Glen Trool Visitor Centre, the whole thing is on dirt forest roads.
Virtually all the route is in the forest. It is probably best to do the route in an anti-clockwise direction as this ensures the steepest part, at Glencaird Hill is a descent.
