This is the final section of a circular route. The circular route is popular with experienced road cyclists as it combines quiet roads with some of the best scenery in Scotland. The route is described in a clockwise direction and it is recommended you do it in that direction. This is because the road near Ben Heasgarnich (see map) has a series of steep hairpin bends at its south end. It is best to do this as a climb and descend at the north side where the road is mainly straight.
Kenmore is quite a small place but it does have a food shop, a tea room and craft shop, a hotel and several B&Bs.
A mile further on the Croft na Caber water sports centre just west of Kenmore has a cafe with good filled rolls and cakes.
Also next to Croft na Caber is the Scottish Crannog Centre: a reproduction crannog by Edinburgh University with displays inside. There were crannogs at one time in lochs all over Scotland. Crannogs are settlements on water erected on stilts, and were presumably built because in uncertain times they offered a certain measure of security. Apart from this one they all date from 2000 years ago or more. If youd like more information Im sure theyll tell you inside.
As you cycle towards Killin, on the other side of Loch Tay, you'll see the Ben Lawers range, some of the grandest mountains in Scotland; Meall nan Tarmachan which towers over Killin, Ben Lawers, and Meall Garbh further east.
The Ardeonaig Hotel, roughly half way along the Loch does beautiful food. No doubt they could also produce coffee and shortbread.
