Find a Route

in The Outer Isles - Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides

Cycling on the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland represents the ultimate 'get away from it all' trip you can make within the British Isles. Beyond them is Iceland and Greenland! There is a real sense of adventure and expedition involved even in getting to the islands, connected to various points on the mainland via a plethora of ferries. The islands are wild and sparsely populated but each group has a very different character. Almost all the roads are so quiet that the fact that there are no dedicated mountain bike routes or traffic-free family trails is no great drawback. If you have made the effort to catch a ferry with your bike and are prepared to cope with whatever the weather may throw at you there are fantastic memories in store of pristine beaches, mighty cliffs, ancient stones and crofters' cottages.
